Original Oil Painting on canvas
“The Pietà after Michelangelo” was born from a dream in which there was a labyrinth with many corridors and entrances, born from a longing to reimagine the connection of the human being with something much greater. This painting became my memory on canvas of that beautiful sculpture by Michelangelo that when I first saw it before my eyes I was stunned, a moving meditation on faith, loss and the enduring power of compassion. It is a surreal interpretation of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, where a woman holds with her right hand this levitating sculpture, a Pietà sculpted from emotions, a reminder that pain transcends time and space, and finds comfort in the most unexpected ways. A palette of cool blues covers the canvas, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that suspends the scene between reality and the ethereal. The Pietà itself, rendered in a muted, almost monochromatic palette, stands as a monument to grief, its familiar, subtly distorted form hinting at the passing of time and the ever-evolving nature of faith. The woman holding the sculpture is a contemporary figure, her pose reminiscent of human beings trying to grasp such spiritual aid, the white blanket she is covered with hinting at a modern interpretation of loss. A soft glow emanates from the woman lying on the floor, like a light source illuminating the Pieta. This concentrated light emphasizes the emotional connection between the woman and the sculpture, a beacon of compassion amidst the cool blues of the dreamscape. The space is transformed into a poignant stage for a timeless drama. The woman occupies the foreground, a steadfast presence despite her unconventional pose. The Pieta, held by her hand, floats above her, existing in a space between the earthly realm and the heavens. The expansive greens and corridor in the background create a sense of infinity, suggesting the universality of pain and the enduring power of faith.
The human form perfectly capturing the woman’s emotional vulnerability. Realism is infused throughout, particularly in the rendering of the Pietà itself, ensuring viewers connect with the weight of loss it embodies. Surreal elements emerge in the dreamlike setting, the floating sculpture, and the cool blue palette, prompting viewers to question the traditional interpretations of faith and grief. The graceful, flowing lines of the woman’s figure evoke the elegant dimensions of the Pietà, creating a sense of unity despite the surreality of the scene. The emphasis falls on the hand that connects the woman to the sculpture, a powerful symbol of compassion and the comfort found in shared humanity. Each brushstroke becomes a whispered prayer, a testament to the enduring power of faith to heal even the deepest wounds. The emotional weight of the Pietà is counterbalanced by the woman’s gentle touch. Unity, the underlying thread, binds these disparate elements – the woman, the Pietà, the blue dreamscape – into a cohesive whole, a testament to the enduring power of compassion to transcend the boundaries of time and space.
“Pieta after Michelangelo” is more than a painting; it’s a meditation on faith, a conversation starter about time, and a celebration of the enduring human capacity for compassion. Imagine it adorning your wall, a daily prompt to contemplate the mysteries of faith and the solace found in shared humanity. Owning this piece is not just an investment in art, but an investment in the enduring power of the human spirit to find solace in the face of grief.
